There’s More To Depression

'Depression' is the term used to describe everyday feelings of low mood which can affect everyone1 from time to time. It’s also much more than that and challenges are faced every day by both healthcare professionals and people who are experiencing symptoms.

There’s More To Depression is a new public education campaign that has been launched to raise awareness of issues surrounding the diagnosis and management of different types of depression. The survey explores themes around treatment from both patients’ and GPs’ point of view on diagnosis, access to information and satisfaction with current services.2

This website shares the results of a recent survey conducted to understand more about the issues surrounding depression affecting GPs and patients throughout the UK and the challenges that they face.

“There is a need to make provision of information to patients less haphazard – using tools that are available will help GPs and patients become more confident in diagnosis and understanding the condition”
Dr Chris Manning, GP and Fellow of the International Society for Affective Disorders.

“Detection and treatment of depression should be a major goal of NHS services”
Professor Allan Young, Professor of Psychiatry at Imperial College London.

“There is a lack of understanding of the available treatment options and services available in the UK. More education in this area is needed and patients and GPs should use resources available”
Emer O’Neill, CEO, Depression Alliance.

There’s More To Depression has been developed and funded by AstraZeneca UK with the input of several independent advisors and Depression Alliance and aims to raise awareness of the length of time to diagnosis in the area of depression and the implications of a correct diagnosis for treatment and care decisions.
